We are all affected by good (or terrible) decision-making and hence it’s a really good idea to start teaching kids decision-making abilities while they’re young. To be honest, many children make judgments based on emotions or spur-of-the-moment considerations. Learning to make informed decisions is a life skill. It must be learned and practiced.

No human activity can evade decision making. It is very crucial to the functioning of an individual, group, organization or any life for that matter. The possibilities of attainment of goals and objectives hinge on the sole act of decision making. It is the pathway to the future.

Humans simply cannot evade the act of decision making. It’s crucial to the functioning of himself, a group, and organization or any life for that matter. One can only achieve their goals and objectives through efficient and effective decision making.

Some people are procrastinators and delay decisions while others have difficulty making even the simple decisions like what to order off the menu in a restaurant, what clothes to wear and what to purchase. Some decisions need to be made quickly while others need to be deliberated, considered and weighed out over a longer period of time.

Making good choices requires a number of abilities, including:

  • Active listening
  • Adaptability
  • Clear communication
  • Creativity
  • Critical thinking
  • Leadership
  • Logic and reasoning
  • Problem solving
  • Teamwork
  • Time management
  • Willingness to learn

Why is it so important to learn it early on?

Teaching children to make their own decisions has several benefits. When they make a good decision, they can gain the greatest amount of satisfaction and fulfillment because they chose it. When children make bad decisions, they may suffer for it, but they can learn from the experience and make better decisions in the future.

Children are prone to make bad decisions in their lives. Because of this they’re more likely to:

  • focus on one aspect of a situation
  • focus on their own position
  • look for immediate benefits
  • want things now
  • act without thinking first
  • make simple distinctions between good and bad, right and wrong
  • make decisions based on a whim.

By talking through the steps of decision-making, you can motivate children to think through their choices and understand the important things to consider when making decisions. Start with simple choices and gradually build up to bigger, more complex problem-solving as children’s capabilities and skills improve.

How do mental models aid in making better decisions?

Mental models are frameworks that help you understand how anything works. It’s a cheat code to making life decisions easier.

These models can help you in understanding life. For example, supply and demand is a mental model that helps you understand how the economy works. Game theory is a mental model that helps you understand how relationships and trust work.

They also guide your perception and behavior. Mental models acts as thinking tools that you use to understand life, make decisions, and solve problems. Learning a new mental model gives you a new way to see the world.
